The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is unique, national, and permanent document in India. It is unaffected by a change of address, even between states. It is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued by the Income Tax Department of India.
It is a must to have a PAN number for those who intend to do investments & file their income tax returns in India. It can be considered as a Indian Tax Number (Tax ID) and an ID proof. IT PAN card is issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act. It is mandatory to quote PAN on return of income, all correspondence with any income tax authority.
Apply for new Permanent Account Number (PAN) to Income Tax Department through a Form 49A. Individuals should always affix a recent colour photograph (size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in the space provided on the form. The photograph should not be stapled or clipped to the form.

Fundamental of PAN Number
The PAN structure is as follows: ABCPL1234C:-
- First five characters are letters,
- Next four numerals,
- Last character letter.
The first three letters are sequence of alphabets from AAA to ZZZ.
The fourth character informs about the type of holder of the card. Each holder is uniquely defined as below:
P - Stands for Individual
F - Stands for Firm
C- Stands for Company
H - Stands for HUF
A - stands for Association of Persons (AOP)
G - Stands for Government
T - stands for TRUST etc.
The fifth character of the PAN is the first character of the surname or last name of the person, in the case of a “Personal” PAN card, where the fourth character is “P” , Company – C, HUF – H etc.
The last character is an alphabetic check digit.
Uses of a PAN:- Purchasing properties & vehicles, Banking, Investing in shares, mutual funds & insurance etc.
Documents can be submitted as proof of identity, proof of address & proof of date of birth (not applicable for foreign citizens) in case of individual applicants (Individual who is a citizen of India) and HUF applicants :-
